Aug. 25th, 2010 @ 12:08 pm Keep Posting New Katrina Links
I know it has been a LONG while, but I wanted to remind everyone that many of their links and blogs on Katrina Links are still active, and a terrific source to donate and volunteer.  I visited the ninth ward last year and talked with a couple people who relocated from there after the hurricane, and many people - years later - are still in need of help.  If anyone has new links to add, please do.  I feel that this has been a helpful resource, and hopefully will continue to do so.  Thanks, P.T.

Jun. 28th, 2006 @ 03:05 pm Two Actions for NOLA Public Housing
Two upcoming actions in New Orleans, sponsored by Survivors Village, (www.survivorsvillage.com) will challenge the federal government and city of New Orleans to uphold the United Nations "Guiding Principles of Internally Displaced People."
Although many public housing units in New Orleans faced only minor damages in Hurricane Katrina, HUD seeks to demolish 5000 public apartments.
After severe looting of the apartments, HUD spent several thousand dollars to fence the units off with barbed wire and metal doors and windows, in an effort to stop residents from returning and begin putting their lives bacck together.

Action 1:
Saturday, July 1 5:00 PM
Iberville Development, corner of Basin and Bienville
Rally and March.
Peaceful march through the French Quarter to disrupt "business-as-usual" and highlight the continued abuses going on a few miles from where tourists are usually located.
Demands: Basic Human Right to safe housing. (UDHR Articles 3, 17, 22, 25)
Right of Return
Preservation of public housing

Action 2:
Tuesday, July 4 3:00 PM
Major Protest to reopen Public Housing
3800 block St. Bernard Ave.
Bring a sleeping bag if you plan to stay at the village

Nov. 11th, 2005 @ 12:21 am Apologies to those who have seen this post alread...
Just trying to really get the word out, especially on boards where there may be a lot of posts in a given day:

I'd like to invite everyone once again to please stop by the community I am trying to fuel: "Dear NoLa..." Everyone who is or who has ever been in love with New Orleans, this is a call to all of us to write her love letters in this time of need. We hope that these love letters will be read by anyone who could possibly suggest "not rebuilding". We hope to try to make our government, our fellow citizens, and the rest of the global community understand what this city is to us.

If this community gets enough posts, I hope to direct media attention to it. But we need to act fast if this idea will work. The gears are turning on a decision concerning the levee system, and hurricane season 2006 gets closer every minute.

Thank you all so much, who have left your letters so far! Please spread the word. And good luck to you all. -Ari

Nov. 10th, 2005 @ 04:12 am Dear NoLa... love letters to our city
I would like to invite you all to visit the new community I am attempting to start.

This community was designed as an open invitation to everyone who is or who has ever been in love with New Orleans to write her letters in this time of need. We hope that these love letters will be read by anyone who could possibly suggest "not rebuilding". We hope to try to make our government, our fellow citizens, and the rest of the global community understand what this city is to us.

If you feel motivated to do so, please help me spread the word about this idea. I feel that if we can compile our stories, we may be able to help people understand that New Orleans is a living, breathing place, with a heart, soul, and mind. Please stop in and write NoLa a letter. Best wishes to everyone.

wispa has posted: ”I'm currently adding new friends to my list and counting everyones (meaning everyone on my friends list excluding communities) TOTAL # of posts and using that number multiplied by $.01 (i can't go much higher than that because i'm a broke college student!) to get a monetary value that i will donate to the red cross!” Today is the last day for this project.
rotcknn_ahren will donate dollars for comments, and merrivere has posted a message of thanks to all.

Sep. 5th, 2005 @ 08:22 pm Displaced College Students Resource: Masterlist
Announcing two resources for displaced college students!

alchemy_gryph from academics_anon has put together a list of schools that are accepting displaced college students on her LJ:
♦ Alphabetical list of colleges and universities accepting displaced students, A-I, J-O, and P-Z.

compscilin took the initiative to transfer the data from that list and from others’ LJ lists onto a Wikinews page so information can be more accessible to the general public:
Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students

The page is being constantly renewed, with more than 65 school announcements still to be added. If you are a student, or have made a similar list and noticed that a certain school is not listed, please feel free to contribute to the masterlist by doing one of two things:

1. Edit the new information directly into the Wikinews page (instructions here and here ).

2. Leave a comment at the discussion page or at the instructions page. Someone will take your comment and edit your contribution into the article.

Please help spread the word!

x-posted to ziasudra and to various LJ communities.
